“On Web Typography” Resources

I recently gave a talk about web typography titled “On Web Typography: Choosing (and Using) Fonts on Screen,” at Chicago’s first annual Tech Week conference.

Billy Whited speaking at Tech Week. During that talk I referenced several resources that have been helpful to me while learning about typography. I’ve decided to share them here.

Books on Typography

While there are a vast number of excellent books on typography, I find that many of them provide a rather shallow overview of the actual “rules” of typography and how to employ them effectively.

These books rank among some of my favorite because of the rich amount of detail and instruction they provide the novice typographer. They are also, as a rule, extremely well written.

Blogs on Typography

The web is saturated with design and inspiration blogs and it can sometimes to be a challenge to separate the wheat from the chaff. While this certainly isn’t an exhaustive list, here are some of my favorite type related websites.

Finding Screen Fonts

With the recent meteoric rise of web fonts, there seems to be a new web font hosting service popping up weekly. I’ve spent some time with a good majority of these services and have had mixed results.

Nonetheless, I’ve had success finding web licensed (or hosted) fonts at these websites and would recommend them to anyone, for a myriad of reasons.

Additionally, I’d like to share an excellent set of notes take by @agentfin during my talk:
